I realised today that I have now been using email for 22 years, which rather took me by surprise!
I got my first email address in April 1992 when I started work at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London. I had to telnet to a UNIX server and run elm (or was it pine? I can’t remember!), so it was nothing like the modern experience of using MS Outlook ™, but it was new, exciting and addictive.
I remember keeping a telnet window open and polling for new messages every few minutes, even though I was receiving very few emails at the time! Little did I realise then that I would come to regret the growth of email and the days of dealing with about 1000 messages per week!
I used gopher then too, and the Lynx browser. Anyone else remember those??
Anyway, I’d better go now. I’ve got more emails to check :-)
