For 10 minutes, the sky echoed with the boom of fireworks. As the first din died, the mosque’s PA system went into overdrive with an (overly?) enthused nasyid song, complete with elaborate male vocal parts and kompang beats. Celebrations—both public and private—of New Year’s Day have definitely changed for me.
