I really should have given this moment a different title!
By the time I’d got my phone out and managed to take the photo the train was travelling quite slowly, but hey, this is St Pancras, which everyone associates with fast trains, right? Like the Eurostar, and the HS1.
Except I don’t get one of those trains home. I get a slow train, one of those that come into the station underground, out of sight. Where they can’t even think of decent platform names. A and B - that’s what the platforms down here are called. Even ‘South’ and ‘North’ would have been better than that, surely? Then at least people would have know where there were likely to end up!
But that got me thinking. How about a bit of imagination to brighten up the daily commute? Maybe they could have called these platforms Gryffindor and Slytherin. I know someone would be bound to point out that those names imply certain things about the moral character of the passengers using them, so I suppose Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff would probably be better choices. More neutral. But I realise those are out too, as Warner Brothers and JK Rowling would probably not be happy about this.
But A and B?!? Come on, that’s just boring.
I reckon a station as grand as this deserves something better.
