Cure for Cabin Fever

January 16th, 2015, 10am

I share this trail report I submitted to the Skinny Ski Trail site used by Cross Country Skiers in the upper Great Lakes Region.

Very satisfying! Nice snow base and even a trail groomed and classic track set in this season of stingy snow.

I skied the Biskey Ponds Ski Trails three times this week, each time adding more distance as my muscles shaped up. The trail is in fine condition considering the bummer beginning of the cross country season in this vicinity. I felt confident enough about trail conditions to use my new skies. The first I have purchased in 25 years!

Apparently the snow faerie and ugly winter-thaw troll cooperated, converting the early season snows into a solid earth-litter-covering base. I guess the snow faerie then returned with a big enough a scattering of snow to enable the volunteer trail-keepers to groom and set a nice classical track.

I found only two spots where a protruding rock might gouge a ski: both near the highest point of the Eagle Ridge trail. Just keep you eyes open and feet nimble as you snow plow off the ‘summit’. A spruce swamp and a few other places had too little snow for a track but a good base.

If the moody winter blues haunt your life, look up the Biskey Ponds Trails. Get out! Take the cure! Ski away the cabin fever!
