It was 23°C with scattered clouds. The breeze was gentle.

You can always improve your place’s appearance to make it look more presentable to your guests or simply impress bypassing people making them jealous. Improving itself has many aspects from colour to design, decorations and so on. But nothing will make your home look friendly and inviting as some window box plants. See for yourself:

 Window Box Gardens Improve Overall Aesthetics

Obviously, placing boxes on windows is not rocket science. But since we aim for aesthetics there are a couple of simple rules you might want to follow in order to successfully achieve the desired effect. Here are a few that will help and aid you in the right direction. Note that the choice is entirely yours, as are your preferences and every house is different. I will try to keep it as general as possible.

1. Size does matter

Practice shows that best window boxes fit perfectly on the window if they leave a 3-4 inches of gaps on the sides. Don’t forget you have plants to grow, so make sure the boxes you choose have at least 7-10 inches of width and about the same depth. Of course it all depends on your window structure, so variations are allowed. Same applies for your plants of choice. Make sure you pick them wisely, and do your research on how high they might grow since one of the main purposes of windows is the ability to see through them. A planting experts’ advice is that you choose from these, for they are not famous with excessive growth:

  • annuals - lobelia, Dianthus, Impatiens, Petunias, Pansies;

  • perennials - english Ivy, Dwarf bulbs, Geraniums, mini roses.

2. Complete the puzzle

This might be tricky - choosing boxes that match your house in terms of material. Painting them the same or similar colour won’t just do the trick. If you aim for perfection and have a sense of style - choose the right material. Wood matches almost everything and is easy to paint and light on the lift. And again - it’s the same for your plants but in terms of colours. Try to approach with accenting on contrast - bright flowers draw attention when in combination with dark painting and surroundings and the opposite. Be creative. Ask an painter for the right colour scheme if needed.

3. The more the sun - the happier the plants. Or not.

The right choice of plants should be relevant to your house’s windows positioning. Simply put - there are plants that like shade and plants that like sun. You need to know which window gets what or how much of both. This way you can plan your selection according to the plants’ needs.
