In rural England it is usual to find the village burial ground at the Parish Church (Church of England), but in Borough Green it’s the Baptist Church that has the graveyard, and we have some interesting graves here. But despite having been attending this church for almost 27 years now, I had never noticed this rather odd inscription, and I’m not really sure what it means!
To the memory of
Mr
Thomas Williams
Late Excise Officer
Who departed this life Nov 27 1835
Aged 41 years
This man’s ways were not common
Beware of trespass/>
Also his beloved wife
Rebecca Williams
Died October 7th 1868
Also three children who died in their infancy
Perhaps he was an eccentric, in which case I suppose this is suitably enigmatic!
Making their mark
Somewhat premature!
